Goal: Source 100% of our palm oil used for cooking from responsible and sustainable sources by the end of 2017.
At Yum! Brands, we have two policies that address palm oil. The first addresses nutrition and our intention to remove palm oil used for cooking from our restaurants. Details of this policy can be found by clicking here. Our second policy, which is the focus of the sustainability goal above, addresses those markets where the nutrition policy cannot be met based on exceptional circumstances and strives to ensure that palm oil that is used for cooking is derived from responsible and sustainable sources. This is defined by our preference for third-party certified sustainable sources and adherence to our six sustainable palm oil sourcing principles. We issued a global survey in late 2015 to assess our progress against our palm oil goals and, as of early 2016, are in the process of assessing the results. Our markets are demonstrating commitment to the journey through testing alternative oils (i.e. canola, rapeseed, sunflower) and developing transition plans to remove palm oil or source only sustainable palm oil.
Sustainable palm oil is an important issue for our business and our industry. We believe that working with our peers, suppliers, NGOs, and other internal and external stakeholders is essential to achieving our goal. That’s why we give preference to suppliers who are certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), a global, nonprofit initiative uniting stakeholders across the supply chain to develop and implement global standards for sustainable palm oil. Approximately one-fifth of the global palm oil supply is certified by RSPO.
