Incorporating sustainability into business is a journey and we acknowledge our role to be environmentally responsible corporate stewards. Telling our story and reporting progress in a transparent way is critical to our path of improvement. We are appreciative of the feedback and recognition that we receive for our efforts.
Since 2010, Yum! Brands has participated in CDP-Climate Change. This international evaluation looks at how well companies are reducing their carbon footprint on their path to improving their long-term impact on the environment. Our participation is a strong symbol of our commitment to transparency and the environment. In 2015 we received a disclosure score of 92 and performance grade of D placing us near the mid-performance band in our business sector. We encourage you to view our 2015 Climate Change report here.
Carbon Trust Certification
KFC United Kingdom and Ireland once again received Carbon Trust certification in 2015. The Certification recognizes companies for reducing their greenhouse gas emissions year-over-year. The assessment found that we achieved an absolute reduction in our carbon footprint (emissions and energy usage) versus the previous year. To achieve certification, we’re required to show all around carbon management performance across operations and our overall score is 73 percent.
Newsweek Green Rankings
Yum! improved its standing in the 2015 Newsweek Green Rankings, which ranks the world’s 500 largest companies, globally and in the U.S., on corporate sustainability and environmental impact. Our position on the U.S. and global indexes rose to 238 and 332 respectively. We will continue to strive to make meaningful change that we expect to reflect positively in our future ranking. China: Pizza Hut Environmental Award
Pizza Hut China was awarded the 2015 China Environmental Prize by the Ministry of Environmental Protection of People’s Republic of China and the China Environmental Protection Foundation. We were honored with this award recognizing our brand commitment to reducing our environmental footprint through energy saving measures and public outreach. Since 2009, Pizza Hut has promoted the green life concept in restaurants during the last week in May through “Pizza Hut Environmental Protection Week”. The brand also launched the nationwide “Pizza Hut Green Scout Camp” which encourages the Student Society of Universities to deliver environmental protection knowledge to primary school students.
China: Yum! Presents At Leading Conference
Yum! Restaurants China was invited to speak at the China Chain Store & Franchisee Association’s annual conference on the topic of applying energy saving technologies in the food service industry. Speakers reviewed Yum’s approach to financial evaluation of technologies and the KFC LEED certified restaurants. The organization includes over 1,000 corporations with over 300,000 locations across the country.
Australia: Industry Recognition
KFC was recognized by the Australian Business Awards with the Sustainability 100 award. The Australian Business Award for Sustainability (SYA) recognizes organizations that execute initiatives that demonstrate leadership and commitment to sustainable business practices.
In 2014, for the first time, KFC Australia was named a finalist in the Banksia Sustainability Awards, Large Business Category. As the first Quick Service Restaurant finalist in this category, KFC Australia was recognized for a number of first-to-market sustainability innovations and solutions.
United Kingdom: Supplier Award For Sustainability
KFC U.K. awarded its second supplier award for sustainability to recognize the supplier who made the biggest positive environmental impact. The winner was Moy Park for achieving zero waste to landfill status across all 14 of its manufacturing facilities and its agricultural base. In addition to this achievement, it has invested in biomass technology within its farming base in the U.K. KFC’s award is not the only recognition that they have received as they were the first U.K. poultry company included in the U.K. Corporate Responsibility Index.
Ian Hyland, Director of Sales-Foodservice, Moy Park, said “We’re delighted that KFC has rewarded Moy Park’s commitment to superior environmental performance with this accolade. Our sustainability agenda focuses not just on the environment, but also customers, suppliers, workplace and the community – similar to the ethos and values of KFC.”
United States: Community Sustainability Partner
Acting locally and being a strong community partner in our company’s hometown of Louisville, Kentucky is important to us. This past year, Yum! Brands sponsored the annual summit of the Louisville Sustainability Council where over 225 community members, representing over 100 organizations gathered to learn about the deep interconnection between the health of our air and human health.
United States: Environmental Star Of Excellence Award
Pizza Hut and KFC global headquarters in Plano, Texas received the Environmental Star of Excellence Award from the city for its commitment to implementing environmental initiatives. The corporate green team not only implemented measures that would impact the headquarters such as waste audits and Earth Day events but far outside the walls of the building by participating in the Great American Cleanup in Plano, donating pizzas to a local food bank and encouraging employees to take sustainability knowledge home.
USGBC Leed In Motion
Yum! Brands was honored by USGBC by being included in their recent publication “LEED in Motion: Retail.” It provides an overview of global progress in the green building movement using the LEED rating system. Their LEED Spotlight focused on Jonathan Balas, AIA, LEEP-AP, Yum! Brands Senior Manager, Global Sustainability. “Green buildings are a core component in our approach to reduce the environmental footprint for our KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut restaurants,” said Balas.
